Statement Regarding HB 616
We strongly oppose HB616, and stand against any action that directly or indirectly devalues students of color and students who identify as LGBTQIA+.
HB616 bans instruction and discussion of sexual identity and gender orientation from Kindergarten through third grade, and further encourages the censorship of discussion related to LGBTQIA+ issues up to 12th grade. HB616 additionally restricts discussion and training on “divisive or inherently racist concepts” that could prevent factual discussion of U.S. history and politics in the classroom, perpetuating the status quo where people of color are systemically afforded less power and privilege compared to those with white skin privilege.
Our mission at Engage Central Ohio is to empower Central Ohio youth to find common ground through leadership development and service to others. Our mission is closely tied to a goal identified by Columbus City Schools to develop students' sense of 'global empathy'--teaching student leaders "to value and engage diverse cultures and unique perspectives through mutual respect and open dialogue while taking action to make the world more equitable and inclusive." (Columbus City Schools Press Release, April 12, 2022). Statement Regarding Ohio House Bill 616 (schoolwires.net)
We firmly believe this bill will foster and encourage prejudice, discrimination, and intolerance by teachers and students alike while harming some of the most vulnerable students in our schools. The repercussions of this bill are in direct conflict with our mission and the development of leadership skills such as empathy, influence, persistence, and communication.
We believe students are able to develop and integrate these leadership skills when they are free to bring their whole selves to the classroom without fear of negative consequences. We believe leadership development and global empathy requires an awareness of yourself and others in context and in relation to power and privilege. We believe leadership development requires skills for communication to navigate hard topics. And, we believe students can best demonstrate influence and persistence when they are feeling safe and valued.
We call on our state legislators to combat this bill and others like it that perpetuate harm in our communities and inhibit student growth potential.
